Kilanko Takes Nigerian Coming-of-Age Story to North America

LAGOS, Nigeria — 9 September 2026: The Nigerian film Kilanko: The Invincible Child is extending its reach to Canada and the United States as its producers pursue new audiences outside the domestic cinema market.

The North American push positions the production to connect with Nigerians in the diaspora and international viewers interested in contemporary African stories.

The film’s expansion reflects a broader movement within Nollywood. Producers increasingly use premieres, community screenings and partnerships with diaspora organisations to build demand before negotiating wider streaming or theatrical distribution.

For independent filmmakers, international screenings can provide more than publicity. A successful tour may generate ticket revenue, audience reviews and relationships with festival programmers, distributors and streaming representatives.

However, international exhibition also creates additional costs. Producers must consider venue hire, travel, insurance, publicity, subtitling, classification requirements and territory-specific contracts.

The financial outcome therefore depends on more than the number of screenings announced. Producers must understand how ticket revenue will be shared, who owns promotional materials and whether any agreement restricts future streaming or theatrical rights.

The rollout also creates opportunities for event promoters, photographers, publicists, designers and community organisations serving African diaspora audiences in Canada and the United States.

Audiences interested in attending should confirm screening cities, venues, dates and authorised ticket links through the film’s official representatives before making payments. Public screening information can change as venues and schedules are finalised.

For Nollywood, the larger question is whether diaspora screenings can become a predictable distribution channel rather than occasional ceremonial premieres. A commercially successful model would allow more Nigerian films to reach international viewers without depending entirely on major global platforms.

EMC TV will monitor the rollout for confirmed screening information and subsequent distribution developments.
