Oborevwori Moves to Deliver 24-Hour Power Supply in Delta, Seeks Strategic Partnerships

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving stable and reliable electricity supply through strategic partnerships with energy experts.

Speaking during a high-level meeting with the management of Power Acumen Consulting Ltd (PACL), Detail Solicitors, and Nigeria Infrastructure Bank (NIB) at Government House, Asaba, the governor identified power distribution—not generation—as the major challenge facing Nigeria’s electricity sector.

He stated that his administration is intensifying efforts to address longstanding power supply gaps through policy reforms, infrastructure development, and strategic collaborations under the “Light Up and Industrialize Delta State Initiative.”

According to Oborevwori, while the state has made notable progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, sustainable electricity remains critical to driving economic growth.
Commending PACL for its “brilliant and insightful presentation,” the governor said the engagement underscores the government’s resolve to partner with competent organizations capable of delivering measurable results.

He announced the formation of a joint technical team comprising representatives of the state government and PACL to develop a clear roadmap and actionable framework for achieving round-the-clock electricity supply.

“We do not want to act blindly. We need a well-structured plan to guide our decisions and ensure long-term success,” he said.

Oborevwori expressed optimism that ongoing reforms would yield results, noting that some communities previously in blackout for over a decade have recently been reconnected to the national grid.

He, however, reiterated that distribution remains the core issue.
“We have the capacity to generate significant megawatts of power daily, but efficient distribution to homes and businesses remains the major hurdle,” he added.
The governor disclosed that the state has enacted an Electricity Law to strengthen regulatory frameworks and has engaged consultants to review policies and recommend practical solutions.

He also emphasized the need for community support in protecting power infrastructure and promoting responsible electricity usage.

Earlier, the Managing Director of PACL, Engr. Matthew Edevbie, revealed that despite Delta State’s installed generation capacity of about 3,000 megawatts—mainly from Okpai, Ughelli, and Sapele—the state currently utilizes less than 200 megawatts.

Edevbie described the “Light Up and Industrialize Delta State Initiative” as a comprehensive development strategy, stressing that electricity is fundamental to economic transformation.

He advocated for the development of a state-controlled power grid to enhance transmission and distribution efficiency.

“With recent regulatory developments, states can now build and operate independent transmission systems, allowing Delta to harness its existing power and ensure reliability,” he said.

He expressed confidence that, with proper coordination and partnerships, Delta State could achieve 24-hour electricity supply in Warri and Asaba before the end of the year.
