WAEC Withholds Results of Candidates in Indebted States Over Unpaid Examination Fees
LAGOS – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of candidates sponsored by state governments that are yet to settle outstanding examination fees, preventing thousands of affected students from accessing their 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
The Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office disclosed that although the 2025 WASSCE results have been officially released, candidates from indebted states will remain unable to check their results until their respective state governments fulfil their financial obligations to the examination body.
According to WAEC, the decision is aimed at recovering outstanding examination fees owed by state governments while ensuring compliance with existing agreements on the sponsorship of candidates.
The examination body appealed to the affected state governments to clear the outstanding debts without further delay to prevent students from facing unnecessary setbacks in their academic and career pursuits.
WAEC emphasized that the welfare and future of the affected candidates should be given priority, noting that timely payment of the outstanding fees would enable students to access their results immediately.
The development has generated concern among education stakeholders, who warned that the delay could negatively impact candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions, applying for scholarships, or pursuing employment opportunities that require O’Level results as part of the application process.
WAEC advised affected candidates to remain calm and liaise with their respective state ministries of education and education authorities for updates while awaiting the settlement of the outstanding examination fees.
