  • 2027 Senate Battle: Victor Ochei Leads in Delta North, Ahead of Ifeanyi Okowa and Ned Nwoko — Survey

A fresh political assessment ahead of the 2027 general elections has identified former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Onyekachi Ochei, as the leading contender for the All Progressives Congress Delta North Senatorial ticket, ahead of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and incumbent Senator Ned Nwoko.

The projection is contained in a report by public affairs analyst Omobola Omonla Itaye, released to journalists on Tuesday. The report examined the strengths, political structures, and trajectories of the three leading aspirants, concluding that Ochei currently holds a strategic advantage, particularly among grassroots mobilizers and young voters across the Anioma region.

Describing the race as a high-stakes contest, the report noted that each of the three candidates brings a distinct political identity, experience, and institutional presence. However, it emphasized that the election is increasingly becoming a referendum on the future of Anioma politics, with growing focus on inclusiveness, generational transition, and coalition-building.

On Okowa, the analysis acknowledged his extensive political career, spanning roles as commissioner, Secretary to the State Government, senator, and two-term governor, as well as his emergence as a vice-presidential candidate in 2023. Despite this, it noted that his long-standing dominance has raised concerns among stakeholders about power rotation and inclusiveness. The latter part of his administration, the report added, was widely seen as centralized, leaving some political blocs feeling excluded. It also pointed to ongoing scrutiny by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as a potential factor influencing public perception.

Regarding Nwoko, the report highlighted his visibility and advocacy, particularly in areas such as malaria eradication and diaspora engagement, which have earned him both local and international recognition. However, it argued that his political structure has often operated outside the traditional power framework in Delta State, raising questions about his ability to build the broad alliances needed to secure the party ticket.

In contrast, Ochei was portrayed as a candidate who combines experience with renewal. The report pointed to his tenure as Speaker, where he demonstrated legislative skill and an ability to build consensus, positioning him as capable of handling the complexities of the Senate. Unlike Okowa, he is not weighed down by prolonged political dominance, and unlike Nwoko, his influence is described as deeply rooted within Delta’s political structure.

It further highlighted Ochei’s grassroots appeal, cross-generational support, and ability to engage multiple political blocs without entrenched rivalries as key drivers of his growing acceptance.

According to the report, voters in Delta North are now faced with three broad choices: continuity with an established but polarizing order, a high-profile candidacy with evolving structural integration, or a middle-ground option offering both stability and renewal.

“The momentum appears to favor a candidate who can unite rather than dominate, and who can bridge political divides,” the report stated, adding that Ochei’s perceived neutrality in past conflicts and his appeal to both grassroots and elite stakeholders give him a comparative edge.

The analysis also linked these trends to broader political developments in Delta State under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, noting that ongoing realignments have increased demand for inclusive leadership and balanced power distribution. These dynamics, it argued, favor candidates less burdened by past rivalries and more aligned with evolving governance expectations.

In conclusion, the report stressed that the Delta North senatorial race has grown beyond individual ambition and now reflects the direction of Anioma politics in a changing landscape. While acknowledging Okowa’s experience and Nwoko’s visibility, it maintained that Ochei currently stands at the intersection of credibility, accessibility, and political renewal, positioning him as the frontrunner for the APC ticket.

It added that the final outcome may depend on whether voters choose continuity or a deliberate shift toward a more inclusive and balanced political future.
